Cox Communications began as Cox Enterprises, an Atlanta-based family-owned chain of newspapers. Cox entered the cable TV business in 1962 with the purchase of several cable networks in Pennsylvania. Cox later bought cable systems in Oregon, Washington, and California. The cable TV systems were incorporated as a subsidiary, Cox Broadcasting Corporation, in 1964. Cox Broadcasting was later renamed Cox Communications.
In 1993, Cox Communications began marketing business telecommunications services. It was the first multiple cable system operator to do so. In 1997, following passage of the 1996 Telecommunications Act, Cox became the first multiple cable system operator to offer residential telephone services. Shortly thereafter, it began offering broadband internet service.
Cox won the PC Magazine Reader's Choice award for High Speed Internet in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, and 2011. Today, Cox has more than six million cable internet customers in nineteen states.
In most of the areas it serves with cable TV and internet, Cox provides digital VOIP (voice-over-internet protocol) telephone service. Over the years, Cox has won numerous customer service awards for its telephone service.
Cox cable TV service includes the Contour application, an interactive guide that makes recommendations based on what the viewer watches, for up to seven individual viewer profiles per subdcriber acount.
Cox provides a full suite of bundled services: Cable TV, broadband internet, phone, and home security. With 444 channels in its most complete TV package, Cox offers a wider variety of programming than most cable TV operators do. Cox internet service is usually faster than competing cable internet services.
Cox Communications offers several standard cable TV channel packages to suit your budget and interests. For qualified new customers, monthly fees for all channel packages will be discounted sharply for the first year of service. For HD or DVR service, a few dollars will be added to your monthly rate.
In addition to the channel packages listed here, Cox carries multiple premium movie and sports channels, along with pay-per-view and on-demand options. Premium movie and sports channels are available as options with the TV Economy package and with any Advanced TV package. Advanced TV Ultimate includes most of the premium movie channels.
Cox offers several levels of cable internet service, so you should be able to find one that suits your budget and the way you use the internet. Cox charges for installation, but you have the option of saving money with a self-install kit. Cox will charge a nominal monthly fee for lease of modems.
The top download speed for the basic Cox internet service is 5 megabits per second (5 MB/S). This is enough for checking e-mail or light web surfing, but if you want interactive gaming, or if you often download videos or large files, you will want more speed.
The top download speed for the midgrade Cox cable internet service is 25 MB/S. This is enough for downloading videos or other large files, or for interactive gaming, but if you want multiplayer interactive gaming, or if you will have multiple devices connected to the internet at the same time, you may want more speed.
In a few markets, Cox offers a top download speed of 150 MB/S. Cox offers a home phone calling plan with unlimited local and long -distance to any phone in the United States or Canada, or to any land line phone in Mexico. With its home phone calling plans, you get enhanced 911 service, your phone number and home address sent automatically to the emergency dispatcher when you dial 911.
